About Rob
Rob Anders was first elected to represent the people of Calgary West on June 2, 1997 as a member of the Official Opposition for the Reform Party of Canada. He was re-elected in 2000, 2004 and 2006. Rob is currently The Joint Chair on The Standing Joint Committee on the Library of Parliament. Rob began his career as a deputy critic for Human Resources until 1998 when he was tasked as the chief critic for Senate and Patronage. In 1999, he assumed the role of deputy critic for Citizenship and Immigration. Mr. Anders then took on the position of Official Opposition Critic for National Defence, where he was the Vice-Chair for the Subcommittee on National Security of the Standing Committee on Justice, Human Rights, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. Mr. Anders has sponsored and participated in many events protesting the Chinese government's occupation of Tibet, brutal repression of Falun Gong practitioners, and military intimidation of Taiwan. He worked hard to facilitate the Dalai Lama's 2004 visit to Canada. He was responsible for drafting and organizing a letter campaign from Canadian Parliamentarians to the President of China, urging him to respect the basic freedoms of 70 million Chinese who adhere to the spiritual practice known as Falun Gong. Mr. Anders also organized a call for democracy and religious freedom in Vietnam and helped bring together Canadian MPs and Senators with religious leaders from Vietnam. As the official opposition's critic of Senate and Patronage Mr. Anders created and chaired the Elected Senate Action Team, a task force determined to advance the cause of Senate Reform in Canada. He worked closely with Alberta's two Senators-elect, Bert Brown and Ted Morton, urging the Prime Minister to respect the results of Alberta's 1998 Senate election. He is also the President of the Canada-Germany InterParliamentary Group which works for a greater friendship and goodwill between parliamentarians of Canada and Germany and thereby serve to further cooperative relations and mutual understanding between national parliaments of both countries and between both countries.
